Swan a usefull animal ally in pregnancy.

Swan

I have been doing lots of research on this animal as an ally for meditation and work during my pregnancy. I have been finding out all about Swans in the uk. Their feeding habbits and life styles and where they are found etc. I have also been collecting Swan pictures and photos to put on my pregnancy shrine.I have been visiting places where they might be found and looking to find them at the local park seems to be the best place.

A Mute Swan
I have chosen the Mute Swan as these seem to be one of the most common in the UK. They are normaly quite placid and calm but during the breading season they can be agressive and are very protective there nests and baby chicks. They are quite big birds and they do give warning by making themselves bigger, streatching out there wings and hissing. They have most of their strength in the wings.  If a chick is lost then the parents will spend upto a week looking for it.

Swans are said to pair for life but if they can not produce young they do separate. Both parents will look after the cygnets ( babies)  and are often found swimming in a line with the adults at each end. Sometimes the Cygnets will ride on the parents back. I have seen this and its is very cute.

The Swan is associated with dreams and dreaming, purity, children and love. I have found this animal a good animal to help with comunication with my unborn child. I will be making a Swan charm to help and I do often leave little gifts for them by the pond such as material to help them line there nests and things to eat. I have carefully researched things that are non harmfull to the adults and the chicks. I also check the pond for discarded fishing line and hooks as this is the biggest killer to these birds. It is sad to think that we and our lifestyle are responsible for more than half of all swan deaths through disrespect and thoughtlesness.

The swan features heavily in many folk law stories and traditions. In Elizabeathen times they were kept as we keep chickens and gease to eat. This lead to swans been given marks to identify there owners. They were very pricey and only the most wealthy could afford them. Any that werent marked were then considered property of the king or Queen. Many people think that this is why they havent been hunted into extinction and saved them for us to enjoy today.

The Swan Maiden is a popular story as well as the Irish story of how Aengus and Caer Ibormeith a love story. Also most people know about Swan Lake.

I will be adding to this blog as I do various meditations and work with the Swan.
